The Maya Cosmovision: Beyond 2012

“The Maya Keepers of Time know the opening of this new cycle to be transcendental, as it is the beginning of the Fifth Sun and brings with it the possibility of great spiritual awakening, insight, and realization for all of humanity.”—Nana Mercedes Barrios Longfellow, Maya Mam elder

Contrary to what you might hear or read in the media, the Maya never predicted that the world would end on December 21, 2012. Never. That’s a complete misinterpretation of the ancient Maya teachings, which have been handed down and preserved by indigenous Maya lineage carriers. The Maya cosmovision brought forward by the Maya elders of today speaks of the end of one cycle or Sun and the beginning of another, one filled with light. This is a time of transition, possibility, and expansion, not apocalypse.

Over the past eight years, I have had the opportunity and honor to learn about the traditional Maya teachings from Nana Mercedes Barrios Longfellow and other Maya elders from Guatemala. A number of us have traveled with the elders to Guatemala and participated in traditional fire ceremonies at Maya sacred sites there. Gatherings and fire ceremonies with the elders have also taken place in the United States, often at Rowe Center in the mountains of western Massachusetts.

Nana Mercedes’ teaching always involves a discussion of the Cholqij, one of the twenty sacred Maya calendars. The Cholqij is used as a guide for the spiritual growth and evolution of human beings, thus its particular importance at this time. The calendar consists of a 260-day cycle, each day of which carries a different frequency. In Nana Mercedes’ words, “Spirit speaks through the energy of the day. If we attune to the frequency of the day and begin to obey the laws of the universe, that day that sacred energy will fully support us.” Using the calendar on a daily basis helps humans to live with a conscious awareness of the larger cosmos that we are a part of here on Earth.

Over the years, I have learned so much from Nana Mercedes: about slowing down and getting in touch with the flow of each day’s energy (through meditation/prayer); about living life with humility and respect for all beings; about being of service to others and being grateful for the blessings we receive every moment on this beautiful planet. To spend time with Nana Mercedes is to experience a deep connection to a profound and wise way of living in the world. “We are one heart,” she has always said, and for me that is one of the most beautiful of the Maya teachings. I feel it profoundly when I am present at a Maya fire ceremony and also when a group of us—some longtime friends, others new friends—comes together to hear the wise teachings that have been handed down for thousands of years.

In September, about 30 of us spent four days at Rowe Center with Nana Mercedes and Nana Regina (who is also from Guatemala). Afterward, my heart was full, and I felt the ancient wisdom and light embodied by the Maya, and other indigenous peoples, shining forth powerfully and helping with the global awakening of all beings to universal oneness. More and more, I see evidence of that awakening, in spite of the huge challenges the planet faces today. The Great Shift—this transition to a new era, or new Sun, which the Maya have foreseen—is with us now. And it’s not about one date, or even one year. As we release old ways based in separation and fear, the cosmic energy will carry us forward beyond time and space into full immersion in the realm of the heart. As Nana Mercedes herself has said, “We are destined to be evolved beings, living in harmony, with great gratitude for the miracles of life.”

2012 and Beyond: Radio Interview

On January 31, 2012, I was interviewed by Peter, Barb, and Ric on the Spiritual HelpDesk online radio show. We talked about the energies of 2012 and beyond and how the Great Shift is affecting all of our lives. I also read an excerpt about my trip to Guatemala with the Maya elders from my book Living with Spirit, Journey of a Flower Child. The program is available for listening at this link: http://spiritualhelpdesk.com/2012/01/23/peggy-kornegger/.

I and We: One Tribe

If you’ve read my recent posts, you may have noticed the recurring theme of oneness. As the energies of these times accelerate and take us along for the ride, it becomes increasingly important to remind ourselves of the consciousness we want to carry forward, as individuals and as a people. Unity consciousness, or oneness, seems to me to be a key focal point in the evolution of a new Earth and a new way of being human.

Large numbers of human beings on this planet live life primarily from the point of view of the ego; “I” consciousness rules. Many people fear losing their individual freedoms within a greater “we” (often seen as “them”). But it’s really all about balance. We become truly free as individuals when we embody freedom within our communities in an ongoing process of receiving and giving: the dance of I and We, which acknowledges the primal connection between self and other.

Enter the Great Shift in humanity’s awareness. Gradually, ideas about sharing, giving back, and “paying forward” are entering the collective consciousness. People are beginning to see their neighbors in all parts of the world as not so different after all. In the aftermath of disasters near or far, we hear countless stories about individuals and groups who have dropped everything to help those in need. It is a time of coming together, of realizing that we are all part of one another.

In the realm of quantum physics, scientists describe a universe in which the smallest particles that make up everything are interconnected in one huge expanding energy field. Spiritual masters throughout history have spoken of a Divine presence that fills and surrounds us in a golden sea of light and love. This “I AM” consciousness has no boundaries; it flows through us all, and within it, there is no separation between I and We. From the point of view of both science and spirituality, then, we are indeed all connected.

As more and more of us awaken to this basic truth, it becomes our joyful responsibility to think and act from a place of spacious oneness, not constricted separateness. We are here to embrace that awareness, to birth a new way of being through living our lives as conscious connected spirit in human form.

Open Doors, Open Windows

What images does the phrase “open doors, open windows” evoke in you? Do you think of summer, when open windows and doors allow the outdoors and indoors to blend into one harmonious experience? When heavy clothes and closed buildings no longer separate us from one another and from our environment? This analogy could be used to describe the times we are living through now, when sharply defined boundaries are beginning to fade as we move more fully into recognition of humanity as one family.

In the past, we have been closed off in the illusion of separateness—nationality, religion, race, age, sexual identity, and belief systems of all kinds. The language we used to express our thoughts or ideas often divided us further. Countries under the spell of nationalist fervor have fought wars with one another for centuries, yet human beings are basically the same, down to their very DNA. Why do we fight and kill our mirror images? Wars have been fought over religion as well, yet if we look closely, all spiritual belief systems stem from the same Source. The Divine does not speak a language of comparison and judgment. Spirit is about love and love alone. In the light of love, differences in national origin, spirituality, race, age, sexual identity, and beliefs become interesting facets of human expression, not causes for mistrust and hatred.

Today, as we experience the expansive energies of what has been called the Great Shift, and we ourselves expand, a new world is evolving that is not separated by words or beliefs—one centered in oneness, or unity consciousness. This does not mean all differences will disappear. It just means we are learning how to accept and celebrate our differences instead of fighting wars over them, either physically or ideologically.

So how do we help this energy of inclusiveness to grow and circle the globe? Perhaps by stepping out of judgment in our own lives and seeing others (and ourselves) with compassion. By looking for similarities and appreciating differences. Let’s end separation now and open our hearts to feeling oneness with every friend or stranger who crosses our path. Find one thing you have in common with another person (and one difference you can learn from), and the door will open wider to reveal many more.

2012: Year of Awakening

This is the year to step away from all the negative messages within the media* and the collective consciousness that have to do with fear, scarcity, suffering, loss, and the end of the world. This is a time of change and transition, of awakening to our greater potential as human beings, but it is NOT the end of the world. It is merely the end of one way of being on Planet Earth and the beginning of a new way of being, one centered in trust, abundance, joy, sharing, and oneness. We are living the transition between those two ways of being.

Transitions can be edgy and challenging, but they also can be filled with new energy and inspiration. It is up to us to define how we choose to go into this new age before us. For my part, I don’t want to go forward kicking and screaming and crying about what has been lost; I want to dance into the new energies full of gratitude and appreciation for the blessings and abundance of each day as it unfolds. And isn’t the sun rising each morning a blessing? Isn’t the very act of breathing a miracle of abundance? The more we look around with an eye for the positive aspects of each moment, the more we see. Trees, flowers, grass, birds; friends, family; music, dance, song; shared laughter, shared love…. There are an infinite number of possibilities for wonder in each individual life. Choose one wonder each morning, however small and seemingly insignificant. Let it carry you through the day. The more you focus on it, the more it will grow, expand, and spark recognition of other wonders in your life.

So take a deep breath, smile, and look out through your eyes as if you had never seen the world before. What tiny miracles are you overlooking in your daily life? Find them. Celebrate them. And watch the wonders multiply.
